We hope the above tips and suggestions help you to find more “free time” in your transitions.

Following is the sixth of ten motivating profiles of an inspiring Half Iron-Distance Triathlete.

Half Iron-Distance Success Story:

Craig Gruber

Craig Gruber has been competing in triathlons for over four years; and among his many accomplishments, he raced faster than five and a half hours in just his second Half Iron-Distance Triathlon, and he qualified for the Boston Marathon in only his second marathon.

Craig owns a company that sells electric power. Though the responsibilities of managing his company are great, it does provide him some degree of time flexibility and more control over his schedule, which helps him to be very consistent with his training sessions. Craig values this greatly and sees consistency in training as one of the great determinants of triathlon success. We could not agree more.

Craig has an extremely supportive family, and that is probably his other greatest endurance sports asset. His wife, Brenda, is an accomplished road racer, and it’s not unusual for both Brenda and their three sons to be cheering Craig on at his races.

As with many parents who participate in endurance sports, one of Craig’s motivations for training and competing is the positive impact he hopes it will have on his family. Evidently this strategy has worked, as all three sons participate in road races in addition to other sports, including soccer, baseball, and tennis. In recent years, the entire family has competed in an informal “Gruber Family Championship” at a local Thanksgiving Day 5K.

Craig credits the IronFit training approach for helping him to stay healthy with the proper mix of training elements and the gradual progressive increases in training volume. Craig jokes that if you are consistent with IronFit training, “Fitness kind of creeps up on you.” Craig also finds the rest day / slide day concept essential to providing greater flexibility and keeping him healthy.

While Craig plans to race his first full Iron-Distance triathlon in the coming year, he expects to mostly race the Half Iron-Distance in the future. He cites the many advantages of the Half Iron-Distance, including a lesser overall training time requirement, less race travel time, lower race expense, and also a reduced risk of injury.

Watch for Craig and his family at the races as he continues to lower his Half Iron-Distance times, and his supportive endurance sports family continues to set a positive example for all of us.
